T1.Done & Creators for Cures are back

Spring has sprung, and with it comes the return of two of our favorite fundraisers—read on to see how you can get involved. Plus, meet a Canadian creator whose art is all over Breakthrough T1D Play!

T1.Done—Speedrunning for Cures April 26–27

Organized by our streaming consultant, Nukkuler, and hosted by speedrunning veteran Spikevegeta, T1.Done is a weekend event you don’t want to miss.

Twelve streamers will participate in two days of lightning-fast gaming, with runs including a four-person Elden Ring All Bosses run, Silent Hill 4 Any%, Link to the Past with Crowd Control, and more.

Last year the T1.Done crew raised over $11,000 for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Can they top it this year? Find out this weekend on twitch.tv/spikevegeta!

Creators for Cures Returns May 11–18—Register Now

Now in its third year, Creators for Cures is an eight-day celebration of the artists, makers, gamers, musicians, and creators in the Breakthrough T1D Play community. Join us May 11–18 to let your creativity shine and help us raise $40,000 (or more?!) for T1D research.

Remember, our fundraising season ends June 30, so if you’re still working toward earning Season 6 prizes, now’s your chance to nab them!

Streamer Spotlight: 8BitVal

You might not know her name, but everyone in the Breakthrough T1D Play community knows 8BitVal’s work—she’s the talented artist behind our Dancing Rufus emoji, our Season 6 dinosaur T-shirt, and several of our event logos, including the T1.Done and Creators for Cures logos in this very newsletter.

Val, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, was diagnosed with type 1 later in life and didn’t have a T1D community until she found us in 2022: “Joining Breakthrough T1D Play was the first time that I had the opportunity to meet others like me, since I’m the only T1D in my family and within my friend circle. I was able to share, connect, and relate to others, without feeling shame or alone.”

Since then, she’s raised over $7,000 for Breakthrough T1D through gaming and art streams, with incentives that have included drawing unique doodles for donors and mailing out thank you cards and stickers that feature her designs. On May 15, she’ll be a featured streamer for Artists Day of Creators for Cures.

Artwork by 8BitVal

A firm believer that positive thinking brings positive outcomes, Val tries her best to teach her son the same and to bring positive vibes and a ton of (good) chaos to her streams. “Because of Breakthrough T1D Play, I’ve grown as a type 1 diabetic, but also as a person and artist,” she says. “I look forward to the many years to come within Breakthrough T1D Play, and to find a cure to type 1 diabetes!”

Keep an eye out for two brand new designs from 8BitVal when our Season 7 prizes debut in July. Until then, you can see more of her artwork in her Squirrel Sprout store.
