Speedrunning for Cures

Between last month’s Heroes of Time event and this weekend’s T1.Done fundraiser, the speedrunning community is making a huge impact in the fight against type 1 diabetes (T1D) this spring.

Read on to learn how playing games really, really fast is rallying support for Breakthrough T1D’s mission.

Heroes of Time Recap

In March, a crew of content creators teamed up for Heroes of Time, a speedrunning charity event celebrating the Legend of Zelda franchise. Ten days of community charity streams were capped off by an IRL weekend fundraiser, with the 33-person team ultimately raising just over $50K across various Zelda speedruns and challenges.

Speedrunning and countless Diet Cokes consumed, but why does it translate so well into fundraising? This Breakthrough T1D blog post breaks it down:

T1.Done Fundraiser This Weekend

Back for its third year, T1.Done is a two-day speedrunning event organized by Nukkuler (a Breakthrough T1D Play team member who lives with T1D) and hosted by Spikevegeta.

The phrase “dot done” comes from the competitive speedrunning scene: during a competition, players type “.done” in the chat to indicate that they have completed their run and stop the timer. The goal of this event is to raise money to “.done” T1D!

On April 18–19, twelve members of the speedrunning community will embark on a variety of challenge runs including:

  • Super Mario 3D World Star Challenge: Donors can increase the number of stars Jhay must collect during his run. If he collects all 380 stars, he’ll take on the infamously challenging Champion’s Road.
  • Pokémon Crystal Yeet Yachts: In this take on the classic game of Battleship, Keizaron and Eddaket must collect unique Pokémon to take a shot at each other’s boats.
  • Super Mario RPG Low Level: Spikevegeta will try to beat the game with the lowest amount of XP possible.
  • Elden Ring Boss Hunter: Last year LilAggy, Mitchriz, star0chris, and YoJosherino raised over $7K during their 4-player co-op run. This year the stakes will be even higher as they race each other to see who can beat the most bosses in two hours.
The fun starts this Saturday at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST at twitch.tv/spikevegeta.

Creators for Cures Coming Up in May

Our annual spring fundraiser, Creators for Cures, returns May 10–17… with a twist! This year we’re mixing it up with no themed days, which means you can stream whatever you want, whenever you want. Arts & crafts? Legos? Music? Woodworking? Tabletop games? Cosplay? (Speedrunning?!) Any creative endeavor you feel like streaming, Creators for Cures is the event for you.

Remember, our Season 7 prizes will retire on June 30, so this could be your last chance to snag them. Get a head start by registering a campaign and starting to plan your charity streams:
